Classic Guacamole
Five ingredients, one bowl, and avocado at the center. Mash it until mostly creamy, leave a few small pieces, then let onion, chile, salt, and lime bring it into focus.

Make it
- Prepare the ingredients. Wash and dry the avocados, citrus, and chile before cutting. Finely mince the onion and chile. For a milder bowl, begin with half the chile and reserve the rest.
- Mash the avocado. Halve the avocados, remove the pits carefully with a spoon, and scoop the flesh into a bowl. Mash with a fork until mostly creamy, leaving a few small avocado pieces.
- Season and taste. Fold in the onion, chile, salt, and citrus juice. Taste with a clean spoon. Add a little more salt or the reserved chile if needed; do not overwhelm the avocado with acid.
- Serve promptly. Serve soon after mixing, ideally within 30 minutes, with tortilla chips or as a side for another dish. If serving later, cover the surface directly and refrigerate at 40°F (4°C) or below.
If something goes wrong
If the flavor seems flat, try a small pinch of salt before adding more citrus. If it tastes too sharp, fold in more ripe avocado. If you want less heat, reserve part of the chile before mixing.
Keep it fresh and safe
Guacamole is at its best just after mixing. Keep it refrigerated if serving later. Do not leave it out for more than 2 hours, or 1 hour above 90°F (32°C); discard any portion that exceeds those limits. Use a clean serving spoon.
A simple variation
Use lemon in place of lime, as the source recipe allows. Serrano gives a more pointed heat; jalapeño is another choice. Neither choice changes the five-ingredient structure. Tomato and cilantro are not part of this version.
Understand it
Why mash by hand?
A fork creates a creamy base without losing every bit of avocado texture. Minced onion and chile give flavor throughout the bowl, while a modest squeeze of citrus keeps the avocado in front.
Keep cooking
Put it on the table
Serve it alongside Classic Beef Fajitas, Carne Asada Tacos, or Loaded Nachos. Putting it on the side lets everyone add as much as they like.
Recipe origin
How this version was prepared
This is an original editorial rewrite of the guacamole recipe in a one-page cookbook scan supplied by the site owner. The scan gives two Hass avocados, minced onion, serrano or jalapeño, salt, and lemon or lime, and describes a rough mash with small avocado pieces. We chose white onion and lime for the main version and added clearer prep and food-safety directions. The book title and author are not visible in the supplied page, so we do not claim them. This exact editorial version has not been independently kitchen-tested.
