The Border Table · Research Edition
Classic Margarita
Fresh lime, tequila, and orange liqueur—bright and cold over one large cube.
Fresh-lime, on-the-rocks presentation.

Make it
- Prepare the glass. If using salt, moisten only part of the outside rim with lime and touch that edge to coarse salt. Place one large square ice cube in a chilled lowball glass.
- Shake. Measure the tequila, orange liqueur, and fresh lime juice into a cocktail shaker. Add ice, cover securely, and shake until the outside of the shaker feels cold.
- Serve. Strain the drink over the single large cube. Add a lime wheel if desired and serve immediately.
Choose your finish
The International Bartenders Association specifies a shaken, strained fresh-lime Margarita in a chilled cocktail glass. This Border Table serving puts that formula over one large cube at the owner’s request; omit the cube and use a chilled cocktail glass for the association’s presentation. Source and method
Why this version is here
The drink proportions follow the International Bartenders Association’s Margarita specification: 50 ml tequila, 20 ml triple sec, and 15 ml fresh lime juice. The large-cube, lowball-glass presentation is this site’s editorial serving choice, not the IBA glassware instruction. No origin story is asserted here.
