Cook it

Choose a broad, shallow dish so every scoop can reach the avocado. The recipe uses six avocados and is meant for sharing.

  1. Prepare the base. Halve and pit the avocados. Scoop the flesh into a wide serving dish and spread it into an even bottom layer. Lightly mash with a fork only as much as needed to spread it.
  2. Build the layers. Spread the sour cream over the avocado, followed by the picante sauce. Scatter the grated Cheddar evenly over the sauce and finish with the chopped green onions.
  3. Chill and serve. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, as the 2021 recipe directs. Keep chilled until serving, then set out with tortilla chips.

Optional heat

The 2021 directions suggest finely chopped jalapeño to taste. Add it as an optional extra before chilling; the base recipe does not require it.

Make-ahead care

Keep the dip refrigerated at 40°F (4°C) or colder. Return it to the refrigerator within 2 hours of serving, or within 1 hour if the room or outdoor temperature is above 90°F (32°C). The avocado can darken with time, so serve the same day for the freshest appearance.

Understand it

Why this is a layered dip

The avocados form a soft base; sour cream adds a cool, creamy band; picante sauce supplies the tomato-chile layer; Cheddar and green onion finish the top. A chip carried through all five layers gives a different bite from fully mashed guacamole. Spread each layer gently so it remains recognizable when served.

Know it

One recorded table, not an invented origin

This exact five-layer combination comes from the owner’s 2021 recipe archive. The old card does not identify an inventor, restaurant, or date of origin for the dip. It belongs here as a specific Tex-Mex-style shared appetizer, with its proportions preserved, rather than as a claim about where all layered dips began.

About this version

The ingredient amounts, layer order, two-hour chill and optional jalapeño come from the owner’s 2021 Authentic Tex-Mex Recipes card. Spreading the avocado and the same-day serving advice clarify how to use that card; no separate historical origin is asserted.
