Cook beans in water slowly. About 1 1/2 hours or until beans are tender
Add the salt at the end
Heat shortening in a small skillet and add to beans ( if you would like to make them flavorful add bacon drippings )
Continue cooking until all the fat is absorbed by the beans. Stir often to prevent from sticking.
Add a bit more shortening, about 1 tbsp, in a skillet
Mash the beans in the skillet, stirring all the time until the beans have absorbed the shortening. Then remove from heat
